What the hell is Erebus? Erebus is, in reality, the Roman spelling of a Greek name meaning "Darkness". But that's not what you want to know is it?
No, it's not. I mean your forum. What is it? Well then, Erebus, as in the forum here, is a text based completely original fantasy role-playing game, courtesy of myself (Dissy) and my absolute best friend on the whole world wide web, Lost. Meaning, all of the materials, organization and layout details are copyrighted to us, unless stated otherwise.
So... What is it exactly? Erebus, I mean. In character, Erebus is the name of one of two worlds in which this rpg takes place (the other being Iairos). It's almost like a parallel universe, of sorts, a duplicate world full of opposites. It's hard to explain while keeping my summary here short, but that's the general gist of it.
Opposites? Yeah, opposites. The main theme of this forum is that every action has an equal and opposite reaction, including people, places and things. Every character born in Iairos will be born at the exact same time as another character in Erebus, and vice versa. These characters are general opposites of each other. If one is good, the other is evil. If one has light hair, the other usually has dark. Blue eyes, red eyes (actually, they're usually orange since orange is the opposite of blue). You get the picture.
But, they're in two separate worlds. Why does it matter if they're opposites? Oh ho! Where in this forum does it say that Erebus is separate? They may be two different worlds but they are connected through a portal, a massive swirling hole in the sky through which Achlys (creatures from Iairos) must travel to find their Enora (creature from Erebus).
Why? Because they'll die if they don't. Once they reach puberty, the Achlys will notice a birthmark-looking tattoo someplace on their body, though the location varies greatly. The mark gives them a clue as who their Enora is and they must go to Erebus to find them. If Achlys and Enora are not united within five years, they both drop from existence, a fate worse than death.
Woah. That's pretty harsh. Is it hard for them to find each other? Of course. There are a lot of creatures in Erebus. Consider that your Enora does not have to be a humanoid. It could very well be a wolf of some type, that could be anywhere in the world of Erebus. Also consider that your Enora will have no way of recognizing that you are their opposite. Enora are not born with marks or clues or hints or anything as to who their Achlys is. The only way they can find out is to touch the mark of an Achlys with their hand or forepaw. If they pull their hand away slowly and a small spark of colored electricity jumps from the mark to their fingers, then they have found their Achlys.
So, then what? What happens after you find them? Various things that all really depend on the character. Most pairs return to Iairos since, without their Achlys, Enora cannot leave Erebus. But once they've found their Achlys they can move freely between worlds. So, many are curious and interested in seeing Iairos. Others like Erebus and wish to stay there. It all depends, really.
Can you loose your Enora again, like if it runs off or something? Nope. Once that spark flies, the pair are permanently bound together for the rest of their lives. Not physically bound, of course. They can wander away from one another but only about 100 ft. Once they part more than 100 ft, the bond they share will suddenly pull them to a stop like a rope tied around their waists until they're back under the required distance. At night they have a little more freedom, the bond weakens to about a mile or so once the Achlys falls asleep. But when the Achlys wakes up, the Enora will literally disappear and reappear back within 100 ft of its Achlys.
And this bond is made of electricity? No. Only when it's formed do you see the spark, which isn't even a real spark. It's just a visible manifestation of the creature's spryo (spirit). So, the bond is made out of spryo, spirit energy basically. Usually it is invisible but sometimes it can be seen as smoke, mist, fire, lightening or heard as a whisper, song or beat.
Spyro? Yes, spyro. it's what we call 'spirit energy' on this forum and it's the basis for the existence of Enora and Achlys. See, Enora have one type of spyro (Silver) that is good for certain types of activities and fanciful actions, while Achlys have another type of Spyro (Gold). Like the positive and negative ends of a magnet, these different types attract, particularly with contact, and that's why the spark flies after the opposites touch each other. It's also the reason counterparts cannot leave one another. Two objects that attract do not want to be separated.
But why does it weaken when the Achlys sleeps then? Because it's spirit energy, it strengthens and weakens with the spirit. Determined, confident creatures tend to have more powerful spyro than reserved, quiet, angsty beings (though this is not always true). Likewise, everyone's spyro output decreases when they go to sleep, part of it spent making dreams and keeping away nightmares and such. Since spyro output decreases, the bond it's made out of weakens and the general attraction between beings lessens. Hence the increased distance they are allowed to travel apart.
So, does that mean it happens when the Enora sleeps too? Nope, because Gold spyro is more powerful than Silver. Think of it like electron around an atom. The negative electrons are attracted to the positive nucleus of the atom and orbit it infinitely once they are in range. But, if the positive charge on the nucleus decreases, the electrons go farther and farther away. However, if the charge on the electrons decreases, it makes no difference because the nucleus of the atom is hardly attracted to the electrons. That may have been a silly analogy but that's the way it works. Put simply: no.
Um... okay. So, if Gold spyro is like the nucleus of an atom, does that mean Achlys can attract multiple Enora? Once again, no. Everyone's spyro is just a little different so the bond can only form between the two beings it was meant for and no one else.
I don't really get it, but whatever. Think of it like fingerprints or puzzle pieces. It's like fingerprints in that, for each individual, it's slightly different, but it's like puzzle pieces in that certain individual spyros fit together perfectly and never let go again... It's really not that important so forget it.
So what about the different types? You mentioned silver and gold. Yup. If you recall, Achlys (creatures from Iairos) have gold spyro while Enora (creatures from Erebus) have silver.
So, what's the difference? Is one good and the other bad or something? No. If you notice, they're gold and silver, not black and white or light and dark. Either one can be used for good or for evil. The difference is in their strength and where it lies. Gold is more powerful than Silver meaning, fantastically, Achlys are naturally more capable. However, Silver is far more easily accessible because it occurs in larger quantities within individuals. So, basically, those with Gold spyro have to learn how to use it and have a relatively small reservoir to use, but what they have is powerful. Those with Silver spyro have a lot more to use at any given time and are born knowing how to access much of it, but they have to learn to control it and what they have is much less powerful than anyone with Gold or Black spyro.
Black spyro? Ah yes. Forgot to mention that. There is a third type of spyro out there but it's a very mystical, rare sort of type that only happens once every 666 thousand years. The perfect combination of Gold and Silver, all that's known about it is that it's both more powerful and more abundant than either one combined, but it's almost impossible to control. Under what circumstances it occurs and why is a mystery but many call it the Spyro of the Gods since the deity that supposedly created the second world (Erebus) was in control of this type.
Reeeeeally? Don't get excited. You are not allowed to create a character with Black spyro... EVER. The only species that have anything even close to black spyro are The Black Four: four custom made species that you are allowed to create at your leisure. Mind you, they DO NOT have black spyro, it's more like a really dark gray. Close and still very powerful, but nowhere near the level of black spyro.
Aw man. So what am I allowed to create? Pretty much anything else. Just remember that Enora are aways some sort of fantasy creature and Achlys are some sort of mortal creature. But, other than that (and the whole spyro bits), you're pretty much free to do what you wish. Humans, wolves, dogs, snakes, deer, whatever. The list goes on. And, as I mentioned before, Achlys and Enora do not have to be similar species. A wolf's Enora could very well be a dragon or a humanoid demon of some type as well as a werewolf or a three-headed dog. It really doesn't matter. I've already pretty much told you what you need to know so... get to it!

+ Frequently Asked Questions +
In a pair of opposites, what happens when one dies? Does the other one die too? After the bond if formed, yes, the two opposites lives are intertwined. If the Achlys dies, the Enora dies with them. However, if the Enora dies, the Achlys will not necessarily because the Achlys is usually the one with the more powerful Spyro. Before the bond is formed, however, either one can die without consequence. The celestial forces that would typically erase any beings that do not find their opposite will leave the living member of the pair alone to live out the rest of their days in solitude. So, if your Enora or your Achlys dies before you get to meet them, you do not have to worry about dropping from existence. You just won't have an opposite.
